Hi Bob, Dave,

Can you make any suggestion on what the best path forward from here is for GBX5 and GBX7 users?

Cheers
Bernard

The problems have all been with GX7, as it attempts to cope with the ongoing environmental changes. The most recent problems, possibly the fatal ones, have to do with sync. But there have been others, like dealing with Vista; not being able to deal with UNICODE; 64-bit; and so on.

If you are using GX5; and if you intend to stay with dBase, and not upgrade your OS to Win7 or other OS's that GM6.7 cannot handle; then you should be fine. As for GXSQL, that's somewhere in between. But basically, there are combinations of environments around these days that no version of GoldBox can handle.

If you want to discuss more specific requirements, correspond with me directly.

This is really sad. I hope Goldbox continues to function for us as it has done so well in the past.

Terry, the programs won't be modified further, so they will continue to run in the same environments. The sticky part comes when the environment changes, and of course it will, thanks to MS.

GoldBox 7 is definitely the best GoldBox ever, but it has been hit hard by the continuing environmental changes. That's not to say that it would have been impossible for Dave to keep up indefinitely; but it did prove to be impractical as a business proposition for him. So, that's why he did what he did. He has loosened things a bit (see the current verbiage on his site); but I don't think that going back to the way things used to be is going to happen. Thanks for your support of the product over the years!

I'm just wondering where VARs like yourself (Bob) see yourselves directing customers in the future. Should we stick with GX7 for the foreseeable future? Or is there an alternative product you (and others) will be looking to swap in to replace GoldBox?

No single program can replace GoldBox, so I'd recommend sticking with it, if you can. Will I be working with other options? Sure, but I don't think that this is the right venue for me to disuss that. Feel free to contact me directly, though.
