HI - Can I change a field type from character to numeric without losing all the information from existing details records with information in the field?

Thanks

No. You'll want to create a temporary holder field and globally-replace the information over to the other field using a suitable dbase expression to convert it from one type to the other (like VAL())

Hi Doug - thanks for the reply and I'm pretty certain you will have picked this up but when I re-read my question I saw that I hadn't explicitly stated that this was changing the type of a field within the DetailsPlus application so just to be 100% sure Smile ...

oh, nope -- I hadn't noticed it was a details plus thing! Sorry, I'm not sure about the answer in the context of DP. I suspect that you CAN do this since the underlying database field isn't going to change, but I'm not 100% sure.

sorry for sidetracking your thread!
