We are about to convert GM 5.5 dBase to 6.7 SQL.
Any ideas what will break after the upgrade?
Things like macros, Aps, custom toolbars.. something like that?
Also, We will need to update our GB5 to SQL version, any ideas how to save existing qfile setups?
Thanks! |

You must upgrade to 5.7 first and then you can go to 6.7 |

I shouldnt expect that anything would break provided the upgrade is run correctly, but if you do have a particularly complicated setup, and you are worried how it will look after the upgrade then you would be well advised to set up a test environment and run the upgrade in there first. This will allow you to test everything fully and make you aware of any potential problems before committing to upgrade your live environment. |

How many User Defined Fields do you have? If you have a large number, this could impose some problems. |

As far as the upgrade of GoldBox is concerned, the switch from dBase GoldMine to SQL GoldMine is a major one. You already know that you need to upgrade GoldBox; unfortunately, all the setups (and therefore the Q-files) will have to be re-created.
It's a matter of changing the way you specify the database (as a BDE Alias, not a filename); often changing from filters to queries; when you do refer to a filename, it's often something like TGT-> instead of CONTACT1->; things like that.
I recommend making Life Rings for each setup you have in GX5; they can be a big help in re-creating setups. Also be sure to leave GX5 in place; you'll need to refer to it for the Q-files.
Once you get all the setups changed over to SQL, upgrading to GoldBox 7 (if and when you do that) will be relatively simple. |

Thanks,
We are about to upgrade it, but we have a mailbox file which is now 1.80GB~ and also we have 1GB~ of archived emails, what would be the best way to migrate all the emails at once? Can we import all emails to mailbox and then convert?
Note that currently we are on 5.5 dBase and we are going to 6.7 SQL. |

I would archive 1.5GB of your current E-mail to the Archive; that will leave you in good shape for the upgrade of GoldMine. At that point, if you intend to continue using the archive, you may want to consider breaking it down in annual bites, something like that.
If you are thinking in terms of putting the archived E-mail back into GoldMine after the upgrade, that should be do-able. However, I wouldn't recommend that you tackle that job on your own. |

You still have not answered my question as to how many user defined fields do you have? |

Sorry, not many custom fields, maybe 20-30. One of the reasons why we are converting it because of the mailbox. We must have all the emails in goldmine. Anyone knows if I have convert 3GB mailbox 5.5 dBase > 5.7dBase > 6.7 SQL ?
Or would i be able to import archived emails(5.5) to 6.7 sql?
Thanks |

See my answer above. It's a slow process, but it can be done. |

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but you will not be able to convert a D license to and E license. There GoldMine 5.5 must already be on an E License. |

DJ - I do not understand. More then once when upgrading to older vesions of Premium, we had to bring clients up to 6.7 then temporarily substituted an E license so that we could host that data in SQL. |

It's not to difficult to understand. Their opening sentence was:
We are about to convert GM 5.5 dBase to 6.7 SQL.
They won't be able to covert a GM 5.5 dBase solution to a GM 6.7 SQL solution unless they already own a 6.7 E license unless you know of some way to legally do that without an E license. |

I agree with you. Your statement made it sound like that it was not technically possible to convert a GMSE to GMCE system hence my comment. They certainly do have to face the issue of how to legally get a license. |
