I got a new Windows 7 computer a few months ago. I purchased Windows 7 Professional 'cause I wanted to run Goldmine in the XP environment.
Frankly, I got so confused with the "Virtual" environment, I threw-up-my-hands and successfully installed Goldmine 6.7 (last DB version - Single user) undr the regular Windows 7 (64-bit BTW). It has been running fine for 3 months without any significant issues (My GM needs are pretty basic).

For redundancy sake, I've been maintaining a duplicate version of my database in the Virtual (XP) environment. I update it from a flash drive weekly.

Now I need to Impor/Update some new data and want to "clean it up" utilizing Goldbox. I want to use my Goldbox 5 in the "virtual" XP environment. (It won't work under Win 7 - Yes, I tried.)
I've tried to install from the Goldbox CD (Gx5.exe) and think I got the configurations (paths) right but am getting "GMW5.exe not found" message. 'Cours I seached around for that file before I realized, I'm using GMw6.

How do I get GBX to "point to" GMW6.exe?

You have a lot going on But I think the key thing is, toss out that old CD. GoldBox hasn't been installed from CDs for many years. The only thing you really need to preserve is the actual license file, License.GX5. Backup everything you have, anyway, of course.

To install GoldBox, download the GoldBox 5 Demo from the Redstone site and install it fresh. During the install process (at the Config screen), you'll have the opportunity to select BCM 6.x instead of BCM 5.x. At that point, you'll be given some special instructions; be sure to follow them. Then, once GoldBox is fully installed, replace the Demo's license file with the original license file.

Thanks Bob.

Just to clarify: License being my orignal customer number (or whatever) and not a copy of some file from my old computer?

You see, I backed up most everything from the old computer -except Goldbox. DOH!

Still have the primary drive from the discarded PC but the Operating System (I think) is preventing me from accessing the disk contents via USB.
Yeah, I always have a LOT going on.

Thanks again, Jim

Are you saying that you do not have the original file, license.gx5, from your original install? If so, you'd need to contact Dave Petonic. There is simply no way to install GoldBox these days, without a valid license file. The license number won't help (althought Dave might have some interest in knowing it).

Thanks.

That just gives me another reason to spend some time 'figgering how to get the files off the old disk.

Don't know why I didn't do that. Guess I was so focused on getting GM working in the XP Virtual environment, then, running it under Win 7, I just lost sight of things. (Plus my bride was bugging me to get the old / empty computer out of the way.

I'll send a note to Dave in the meantime (I hate to bug him off-forum).
Thanks again, Jim

You really haven't identified what it is that you actually have. If it's very old, then you'll need to be very careful about updating (there are specific instructions about pre-2005 installs). And I DO recommend that you contact Dave directly; he no longer monitors the boards (although I do sometimes point him to specific posts).

Or, of course, you could hire me to get you up to speed

Just an Update.

Dave sent me my license so I could load the Demo and (I guess) run the licensed version.

Pretty good service it seems to me!

Everything SEEMS to be configued properly.

As I (in effect) have two GM systems; one that is my "daily driver" which is running fine under Win 7 and the duplicate ('sorta back-up) system which stays in the "virtual XP environment and gets updated/backed up weekly, I won't be able to make certain everything is hunky-dory before the weekend.
I hope to have some records added / updated and appropriate merge purging at that time.Of course, that will be done in the Virtual XP environment, then, I'll copy the updated database back to my Win 7 version. A little convoluted but, it seems to work.

Yes, I'll back everything up (and then some).

So far - So good.

The Goldbox impor/update and merge/purge was about as smooth as it's ever gone.
