Cannot open database "Goldmine' requested by the login. The login failed.
This is the message I am receiving when away from the computer for a while. The SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) Service is running because it is set to Automatic. But when I stop and restart this service Goldmine opens fine with no error message. It continues to open ok until I am away for a while.
What gives? Any clues? See attached pics to see GM version, error message and SQL Service properties. This is running and hosted on Windows 8.1 and SQL Server Express 2012.It's been working fine for months.

Try to make an ODBC Connection in Windows to that Database to test your Connectivity for issues.
Open up your GM.ini and see where your:
SysDir=
GoldDir=
CommonDir=
...are pointing. Are those correct?
Have you opened Ports 1433 & 1434 on your SQL Server? |

When this happens, check "My Computer" to see if your network drives are still connected.
Microsoft changed a setting recently on mapped drive inactivity timeouts... |

Was away and could not reply until now.
DJ -
SysDir=f:\goldmine data\goldmine\
GoldDir=Goldmine:
CommonDir=Goldmine:
My mapped network drive is F. Those locations seem ok.
I am using SQL Server Express and am not sure if those ports are open and do not know how to open them in Express. Should they be open? I do not see them open in my router. |

I believe this started happening with upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 but I could be wrong.
Doug...yes I have me computer set to sleep because I have a huge 700 watt power supply and 3 hard drives and powerful graphics card on this machine. I am pretty sure that this may have something to do with sleep. I bet if this were not put to sleep this issue would not be happening. My C Drive where Goldmine resides is an SSD Drive.
TPorter - when this happens the mapped network drive is active. It is also active when awakened from sleep.
I will give a couple more screen shots showing the logs. Is a database supposed to open every few minutes? My logs will get full. |

Did you create your own SQL Login, SAM?
Did you remember to give SAM Sys Admin rights?
The default SQL Login is sa with whatever Password you assigned to the sa login. |

I certainly agree with DJ's last comment.
The key to the message is the 'State' which the server will accurately set to reflect the source of the problem.
I would enter the following into Google Search "sql error 18456 state 38". You will see many listings for your "18456, severity: 14, state: 38" one of which says
Quote: |
"State 38 means user doesn't have access to database it is trying to connect to." |
Check out all those postings if applying DJ's very correct suggestion does not completely solve your problem. |

I wonder if the windows user account specified to run the SQL service(s) hasn't got proper access to the location of the database files. |

It's puzzling for sure. Keep in mind this Goldmine has been operating smoothly for months.
SAM - is a user created log in with proper credentials.
The user account (which is me) has Administrative rights over the entire C Drive including the SQL Server properties.
Now I am not sure this is an issue with Sleep because it sometimes happens when not in sleep mode. It's as if something times out after a period of inactivity in not using Goldmine for a while.
The mapped network drive is active, the Sql Server Service is running and I can log in to Sql Server Management Studio using SAM.
The problem only disappears when I restart the Sql Server Service or restart the computer. |

I have had issues with Windows 8 needing to run things as Administrator even though I am administrator.

Have you tried just creating an ODBC Connection from that system to see if you have the rights? |

don't mess with rnu-as-administrator or compatibility settings in the GoldMine exe's properties/shortcut.
go back to troubleshooting why your SQL server is restarting itself so much. |
