I have a client that is on a older verison of GoldMine 5.50.10424. They had a problem about a week ago where just about all their notes in the General Notes tab disappeared. I was able to restore them and they are up and running, I just don't know why it happened. There was no error message. Granted I have told them for years that they should be placing their notes in the completed activity note field and they are trained to put the notes both places since they prefer looking at the notes in the general notes tab. I have warned them repeatedly that one day this could happen.
I was just wondering if anyone has seen this happen without an error message and if there is some way to prevent in the future. Their Contact1.dbt file is 7,966 kb and below is their GoldMine information.

unless they only have a few contacts, this indicates that the notes are actually lost and unrecoverable...

The only hope they'd have would be to make a sync set of what they have now and restore to an older backup that still had the notes and then sync in the more recent stuff.

Doug - She recovered the notes. Her question is "Why".

Some thoughts. Go into GM's Logs, look at the error log and see if you seen any entries dealing with contact1.dbt, "Blob", etc.

If the users cannot see any notes in the notes tab, that means that there is a problem with contact1.dbt. If you have to restore, be sure to restore all three contact1 files.

I would backup then perform maintenance. I would first just index, then do a rebuild with the sort/verify switches turned on. See if it can get through without any error conditions.

Periodic maintenance may help prevent this (and other) problems. Also, daily backups will save the day.

I did look through the error logs and I could not find any problems with Contact1.dbt. I did restore all 3 files when I did the restore and I did perform maintenance after the restore with no problems.
I have them setup to do maintenance every night.
They do a nightly backup and there are several laptops with the full database on them for backup as well.

My real question is has anyone seen this happen and it so could you tell why it happened.

Thanks,
Rose

Ive seen this happen a few times, but generally GoldMine will start throwing up contact1 BLOB errors. The fact that it isnt might indicate that there was an issue with the contact1.dbt file, and someone ran a maintenance before the errors showed up, which would wipe the contact1.dbt file meaning that the BLOB errors never appeared. Thats the best guess I can come up with. Its definately an issue with a corrupted contact1.dbt file tho.

I agree with Ronan. That shows one good reason daily backups and/or backups before maintenance are very important.
