Does anyone know of a way to show a custom field on multiple lines? My client needs a custom Notes field where she can type info like the Notes tab, but the custom field shows as one big line.
Thanks! |

GoldMine is very limited in this regard. I know what you mean; ACT! has it. I believe the max length of line that can be displayed is about 70 characters; and the max data length for a custom field is about 255. It is not possible to add custom Notes fields to the Contact2 table, which is where User-Defined fields go. |

Your best bet would be to use a detail to store the information. You can create a custom tab to display only details of that type so they are easier to locate and view. |

What I have always recommended in these cases was to have your end users create a Historical Activity using a unique ActvCode & ResultCode using the Notes field for their custom Notes. You may even have a customed designed standard format that you utilized for these Notes.
Next set up a GM+View/GM+Browser View to display just these type of Notes, and or Historical Activities. I give you examples of this GM_View/GM+Browser View in The Hacker's Guide series of books.
For example: My consultants complete a Next Action with the first ActvCode character of C, and a ResultCode of COM for consultant work with clients. We can then review the GM+View screen to display only those type of activities with their Notes so that we don't have to hunt through the entire History tab to see what work was accomplished with them in the past. |

I wouldn't argue with either Ronan or DJ about this; they have different solutions, and both would work.
One thing: if your concerns include the appearance of the Notes for either the Detail or History, you might consider a GoldBox View. It gives you the ability to configure excellent display of all the fields for either Details or History, including the Notes. |

I agree with all of the above suggestions. The use of details may be the easiest solution. If you go that route, also examine Details Plus which would give you two notes per detail. www.solica.com |

Likewise the GoldBox View (2 Notes). Along with the additional fields. |

thanks for all the replies, I'll play with using the Details and History and see which works best for her...and which works best for the actual report. We have Goldbox but I'm not too solid with its use so I'll try the other options first.
Thanks again! |

If you have GoldBox, you should be using it because it may save your life (database) some time. If you need help in getting into it, I recommend you contact Bob Taylor who has been "Mr. GoldBox" in my life. |

I'd go with the details plus 2 plugin-version solution from solica here. You get two notes fields to play with in the layout however you like. It's certainly affordable. |

Details Plus looks pretty cool but not sure if she needs that. Using the regular Details tab works well except that I'm having trouble getting the Notes to show on a report properly. |
