I created an addition to the ini file to populate the dear field with the first name of the contact when the contact name is entered.

No problem there, it works fine as we create new records.

However, we had several hundred records entered before I made the change to the ini and I want to populate the dear field for those.

In the past, I would do an export... then import matching on the accountno, importing the contact field to overwrite the existing contact name and then clicking on the option for the import process to have the ini take its action on the record.

This time, the dear field is not filling in.

Working with CE 7

Any suggestions would be welcome.

global replace the contact field with a dbase expression (of contact1->contact) and be sure to check the 'update fields based on instructions in the lookup.ini' box.

Smile

Of course, backup prior to performing the operation as a misstep in the global replace wizard could leave you in a world of hurt.

You could also filter the records where Dear is blank and then do a Global Replace using an Expression:

word(trim(contact1->contact),1)

As you are to have the Lookup.ini created I would just Globally Replace the Deerfield with itself, and utilize the Lookup.ini during the process.

Yes, that's the way I would do it.

I agree with DJ and Pam. That is the way I would do it also. Be sure to backup first before ever doing any "global replace".

I used the method suggested by Eric. That did the trick.

Thanks to all.
