I successfully imported records from one Goldmine database to another, but the org chart relationships have been lost. These records now have new AccountNo so I'm probably just needing to update those in their new database, right? Can anyone tell me where those relationships are defined and/or stored?

I'm not really clear on how those OrgChart records were created in the first place, but you do have the tool you need now. Are you at all familiar GoldBox's Virtual OrgChart creator? What versions of GoldMine and GoldBox?

To answer your questions, the OrgChart data is stored in Contsupp records with a RecType of "O". But the definition will depend on how they were created (and at this point, exactly what you'd like to have).

thanks for the help, bob!

I forgot to add my info to the signature. I'm using Version 2008-A
/Goldbox-5 Professional. I am familiar with the Org Chart Creator, but I was hoping to save some effort by re-creating what existed in the olddatabase in the new one.

I simply combined two Goldmine databases by importing records from one into the other. Everything came across except the org charts. The Orgs existed ion the old database and I want to re-create them in the new one. The goldbox Org Chart tool could help me but I'd have to re-define the relationships. Speaking of that org chart tool, if I have ten accounts I want in an org chart, how do I choose which account is the 'parent' account in that org tree?

Well, a pretty good rule of thumb is this: if records are already in GoldMine, use sync to move them from one database to another; do NOT use Import. That is why you don't have OrgCharts, and I believe you would have if you had used sync. I don't know if removing the records you imported, and going back to use sync is an option for you at this point; but if it is, I'd pursue it.

Because GoldBox has 2 entirely different OrgChart builders in GoldBox5, answer the above for me before we get into details of how to use them.

Did some more tinkerin'...and my task was accomplished using a dbase table (basically the contsupp table from the old database, with updated AccountNo) instead of using the Main contact tables.

As usual, I just needed to take a break and walk around the building...I'm still interested in any pointers you might have when using the tool from Main contacts, however. It's my understanding it will assign the oldest account to the "top" of the org tree. Is there some other way I can assign a particular account in the org tree to be the top account?

Regarding sync...it's too late, but I am not familiar with that anyway. I might find out it could have saved me some time!!! I'll research it, although I hope I won't need to combine databases anymore...thanks again!!

OK, I'm not going to discuss both types of setups, but I'll give you a quick rundown on each, and let you choose...

Traditional OrgChart builder--2 levels only. Does permit use of an expression to select top level record. Is NOT included in GoldBox 7 and will not be in future editions of GoldBox.

Virtual OrgCharts with option to create in GoldMine--the future of GoldBox OrgChart Building. Built from a query, so top level becomes an Order By function. Up to 4 levels. Virtual OrgChart is actually a preview of what will be produced in GoldMine.

I recommend going the 2nd route.

Regarding sync: it would have saved you a lot of time, I think.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll learn more about the virtual org tool. Would it be asking too much to get an example of an expression that would select the top level record?

I take it you mean the old OC tool. The data has to exist. For example, Contact2->Uhomeoffic = "Y" (meaning a record in the OrgChart either is or isn't the home office; only one should be). Here is what GoldBox's Help has to say about it:

Brk 1st By default, the 'First Found' becomes the Top Level record, but you can choose which record within the Break is Top Level. Typically you would pre-designate these records before running the Org Chart procedure, either by placing a value in a particular field of the targeted records, or, even better, by placing them in a Group. You could then use the InGroup() function in this expression.
