GMPE 8.03; Microsoft Office 2003.
Client is receiving excel spreadseets in GMPE's email. When he tries to open the spreadsheet, he gets the "Strict Parse Error". I am told (but have not yet verified) that if that email with spreadsheet is forwarded to a gmail account then forwarded back to GoldMine, the spreadsheet will open.
This is email from just one source. When client forwards the email to me, I get the same error when attempting to launch from GoldMine or when attempting to open the spreadsheet independently from GoldMine.
Have any of you had any experience with this situation? |

Havent seen it before, but from looking on Google it seems to be an issue with the way the Excel sheet was created, possibly from XML data containing dodgy characters or something.
Do you know where the Excel sheet is coming from, like is it just data someone has entered into a blank sheet, or is it an export from something? If its an export then Id hazard a guess that the export is causing the problem. |

Usually a parsing era is the result of bad data conversion into Excel. For instance when you open a CSV file in Excel or an XML file in Excel and there are bad records in the data. |

Thanks to both of you for your commments. Before I posted the question here, I did google it and came up with much the same information. Any thoughts as to why the spreadsheet would open after it had been forwarded to a gmail account then back to the client using GM?
I will post the final results so that we can all learn from this. |

Can you verify that that is actually the case (if it is forwarded to and then back from a gmail account it will open), if you try it with the one you received can you open it? |

I am in the process of running several tests to see if it is GM related or not. I will keep you posted. |

I have verified the following. If the email is first received in Outlook (or Gmail), the attachment will open. If the email is received in Outlook (or Gmail) then forwarded to GoldMine, the attachment will open. If the email is first recieved in GoldMine, the attachment will not open.
When the SML docoment is first recieved and brough into Excel, Excel converts the document and opens. When the SML is first received in GoldMine, something corrupts the header of the document so that it does not properly convert to Excel.
So the question is, what is unique about GM's email client that changes (corrupts) the header of an attachment that it receives. |

The first thing Id be looking at is to see if there is anything the email goes thru on the machine en route to GoldMine, ie AV software or spyware scanner or something, that the email does not go thru when opened in Outlook or Gmail. |

I'd have to believe that your AV is doing something to the file. |

Thanks for the suggestion. that is one area that I did not test. We have tested this with three different systems that happen to have 3 different anti-virus (AVG, ESET NOD32, and some version of McAfee). I just tested this with no anti-virus running. Same results. I have sent a full report with sample files to FRS. They seem to think it is a problem with GM. They are testing to see if this exists with 8.5, |
