Global Replace finding one record at a time??

Hello all

This is a very bizarre one I think.

I've had a global replace set up which has worked impeccably. Until an hour ago, when it suddenly stopped finding any records at all. After a series of deleting and setting up brand new search & replace, now I have an interesting, in the Chinese sense, situation, where the filter works, but only finds ONE record at a time.

This is GoldBox 5 Premium

I've done repeated pack & reindex of GoldMine system files. I've also cleared T logs in GoldMine and done pack &rebuild. A lot.

BTW this is a GoldBox replace set up as a filter within GoldBox. I have no tagged records highlighted or filters activated within GoldMine which might be confusing the issue. In fact, I took GoldMine out of the picture altogether by running the replace with GM shut.

There's a corruption somewhere, is there?

Any help gratefully received.

GM 6.7
build 70226
GoldBox 5 premium
XP

Just to be clear, it finds and replaces exactly as set up to do but only one record at a time. i.e. the filter 'works' and the fields are correct.

Go to the Global Replace Setup screen, click the Life Ring icon, send the TXT file to the below email address.

Just to report feedback: Dave had a look at the text file. He reported back that there were no known bugs with the prog and he could see nothing wrong with the lifering.

Neverytheless, the problem persists. It's odd. I am using the exact same filters I did for an entire day. But suddenly they stopped producing any more records than one at a time. And the problem remains today.

Quote:
Dave said it is "Something local, something environmental. Maybe the indexes in GoldMine are corrupted or something? Other corruption in the data? Maybe the BDE is not setup properly? Also, try opening GXSETUP.DBF in the BR7 Utility, then run the CLEANSE THE TABLE item from the dropdown.

I tried cleanse, nothing. I've repacked and indexed from GoldMine (contsupp & contact2 + everything else) countless times. And I do a pack & index of GoldBox too, requently, hoping to clear the problem. It is getting no better.

I was wondering if someone could elucidate what Dave might mean by saying Maybe the BDE is not setup properly? I've never consciously set it up in the first place. Not in GoldBox. And in GM once it's there, it's there. I don't do anything to it. And also what does Dave mean by 'something environmental' on my system? (same thing, I guess.)

Dave also suggested this:-

Quote:
Another way to do this:

EXPORT those CONTSUPP records out, using the Export in GoldBox.

IMPORT / UPDATE into Details. Use RECID as the index for CONTSUPP. Use CONTACC as the Parent Index, and the ACCOUNTNO as the Source Exprn. Then just map into the fields to change, and use the green EXPN button to put in the literal values.

Everything else I do in GoldBox works just fine. Indeed, the global replace worked brilliantly for a day. Then it suddenly stopped. No filter that worked before works now to find any more than one record at a time. Isn't it strange? Any ideas anyone?

global replace - working but not on one tab

After extensive testing, I can report the following:-

1. I've run global replace using other detail tabs (all expanded tabs)
Resuilt
they all work

2. I've tried putting the original detail information on a different tab
Resuilt
they all work

3. I've run the original search and replace on the original tab
Resuilt
DOESN'T work

4. I've set up a brand new global replace, new filter expression, new field replacements, but on the original tab
Resuilt
DOESN'T work

5. I tried (4) above but using a different tab
Resuilt
[b] works

CONCLUSION
even though the tab appears to work fine, search and replace will not work.

Humph. But at least I now know what Dave's 'environmental' means. It means something in GoldMine. And that something appears to be a corrupted expanded tab (at least in terms of Global Replace). Otherwise there is nothing that doesn't work on that tab.

Just to be clear. what I mean by expanded tab is, not the original details tab, but a tab set up from the details tab, with a label "Info". You know, the ones you create.

Any brainboxes out there to tell mewhat to do? (Delete the tab and start over, I guess.)

But - strange huh?

When you want to replace fields in existing records, there are always 2 ways you can go, if you have GoldBox: 1) Global Replace; 2) Import/Update. Two different ways to accomplish the same thing. Dave suggested you try option 2), and so do I. In fact, I almost never use Global Replace, because it has to be run over the entire database, and that may take longer than I want it to. A Q-file running an Export and an Import/Update will be faster.

If you need help implementing 2), ask questions about it. And if your Export only gives you one record, then you need to have another look at your filter. Remember, you sent Dave that LifeRing, but the rest of us haven't seen it (and Dave's on vacation for a few days, now).

Bob, that's kind, thank you.

In truth, yes. I've tried looking at Export before but given up. I can't make head nor tail of it.

I've got as far as
* put in a filter
* set up a specific replace field (though I don't get that at all, what it's for)
* I don't know what to put in the export quantity field - do I have to count the number of detail records and give a number? Dont' get it. If I put in a filter, why can't it export the records that match the filter?? Why would I want to specify a number?

* map fields for export -
Quote:
Use RECID as the index for CONTSUPP
Use CONTACC as the Parent Index
ACCOUNTNO as the Source Exprn

I can see all these fields - but I don't get what Dave is saying. How do I use RECID as the index?
How do I use CONTACC as the parent index.
Where do I use ACCOUNTNO as the Source Exprn

Sorry Bob. For me this process is a 'blanch, flail, turn away from GoldBox' moment. Any help gratefully received. But I haven't got far at all. Sorry!

I'm kind of keen on Global Replace. It's so SIMPLE!

Mind you, if I could learn to use import/export, I could make groups out of records with opportunities, as you said before I could. Which would be very very useful....

Confused

In GoldBox,

1. Setup | Export

2. Create a New Setup

3. Supplemental radio button | Next

4. Add LaunchID and Description to create a new Setup

5. Click Record Type button and select P-Details/...

6. Add filter...whatever you've been using, I guess (still haven't seen it).

7. No need to change anything else on this screen, unless you want to change the export file name/type or location (don't do that for this test). Click the MAP Fields for Export button.

8. To get every field in the Detail record, check every box in the leftmost column, down to (but not including) C1_ACCT.

9. Click Exit to close the MAP screen. Press the thunderbolt button to run the Export.

When complete, you can use File | Open Any dBase Table to see what you've exported to GMEXDATA.dbf. This will become the Source file for your Import/Update.

Let me know when you get that far; let's get the Export done before going on to the Import/Update.

Bob, much gratitude at this end. Thank you for this exemplary, lucid, absolutely clear explanation.

Will do it all and get back shortly.

Now you need a well-deserved English cuppa tea. (Am throwing one over the ocean to you.)

That was easily done Bob! Thank you.

It appears to have produced the exact number of records I would have expected. I am now officially ready to import.

Hmm.

Got quite a way. One thing is that the words that Dave used in his email don't match precisely with what appears on screen. I think I got it more or less right, but then one field populated another field, like when I put the recid in it also filled in another field. Prob it's because I'm on GX5 and Dave was referring to a different version, maybe.

Then I got stuck. Very.

Anyway. Further instructions would be very much appreciated. I am slightly on the verge of rampant e-excitement here. This looks like being very very useful.

Can you post the LifeRing for the Import that you have so far?
