Hello all. I'm hoping some of you kind folks here might be able to help me a bit.

I'm working on Q files and I can't get the lanch timer to activate.

SETUP

XP. Goldbox 5. Build 2009-E.
Goldmine path: G:\Goldmine|
Goldbox path G:\Goldmine|\GoldBox
Qfile QMLLNAZ

RUN STATEMENT : igx5.exe dep /Q QMLLNAZ

(copying example given, but I don't really understand it. Why is there an 'i' before GX5? and what's dep/.

METHOD
1. set up launch time with run statement
2. launch timer so it is on top, focussed (Goldbox Timer)
3. wait (I'm aware about waiting 40 seconds or so into the minute when waiting for activation, but nothing happens)

Would love some clues, if anyone is able.

Also, is GOldBox timer the way to go, or is the Windows Scheduler better/ (But I'd still
need to understand how to write the launch statement, and I don't...)

Thanks so much!

Razz

Hi Clare!

Windows Scheduler is better. The Launch Timer is only in GoldBox for backward compatibility.

IGX5.EXE is the launch executable for the Batch Processor, whereas GX5.EXE is for the main app, the setup, the interface.

Clare, to be specific about the makeup of the Launch statement, it is prefigured by GoldBox. When you are in the Q-file, you press the clipboard icon/button. This opens a group of 5 possible Launch statements for different kinds of situations. The one you want is the 3rd one, for Desktop, Timer or Start/Run. Just copy and paste it into Windows Task Scheduler, AFTER you have done the initial setup (you'll have the opportunity to tell it to re-open in advanced mode, and that's what you want).

Here's an example, from my system:

c:\gmapps\goldbox5\IGX5.EXE rsc /Q QPRDYCAL GOLDBOXPATH c:\gmapps\goldbox5

Don't worry about the elements of the statement; it's complicated, and that's why GoldBox assembles it for you.

Oh WOWWWWWWWWWWW....! That is SO exciting! I was sitting here waiting with baited breath and it worked! I've got dozens of groups that keep needing updating for my mailing lists and it is from now on going to be done while I gently snore in bed. (EDIT THAT LAST REMARK.)

Thank you Dave and Bob. But hey, you kept me waiting at least 5 minutes before replying. That's disgraceful. Surprised )

Love it LOVE IT. Great feature, Dave... And are you both impressed I am advancing and getting to grips with some of the more fun bits of GoldBox? Well, I am!

Don't think I'm going to stop there. I haven't even got onto GoldBox Views yet. Am convinced it's somethiing I oughta fall in love with, but I'm not quite there conceptually. And do I want them? Or don't I want them?

And Bob, you once told me about Hub and Spoke. Didn't that collate all sorts of things from fields? Is that what's been replaced with views?

OK, getting beyond over-excitement here. Maybe need to spend a bit more time being thrilled about Qfiles before I delve into the remaining dark arts.

Exit one happy woman for now. Thanks both.

xx

PS Dave, BTW did you get my message that eventful night...? Will ring for an update some time on current events...

Yep, one of my clients has over 100 Groups of various ilk updated nightly. Amazingly fast; they get to do lots of other things every night, too.

Haven't thought about Hub n Spoke for years. It no longer exists within GoldBox, I'm fairly sure of that. Best thing to do is post the idea of what you'd like to accomplish, and we'll see if we can give you an idea. Always fit the tool to the idea, never the other way 'round.

As for Views, after some years of working with them, I've decided that they are best used for:

--Specialty Data entry. This can include anything from special Lookup Lists (see OTF Lookups); integrating data entry for multiple tables into one View (perhaps using a Q-file as the Post operation, to address all the tables, including non-GM tables); to all sorts of special interrelationships among data and tables.
--Retrieve and display data from multiple tables, with multiple relational levels (again, often involving outside data tables).

There are other things that Views can do, but often those things can be done more easily with GM+ Views, or other tools. [/list]

Hmm... Bob... that all sounds awfully grown up. Maybe a bit advanced for this particular GoldMine wild child.

I like your idea about working out what I want first and then seeing if there's a fit... my brain isn't quite stretchy enough for any of the above. (i.e. if given a test on what it all means I would probably stare wildly for 5 minutes catching flies).

But I LOVE IT that Goldbox can do all that!

Thanks again!
