We have 75K records with many dupes and, due to limited IT support, new dupes created monthly (new records from web, trade shows, etc, are directly imported via Excel spreadsheet with no dupe-looking).
Does the Goldmine Merge-Purge procedure work OK? I know Goldbox is recommended, but I don't know if that's because it can do a more complete job or if the GM tool is faulty.
I know that one option is having a VAR do it for us, but wanted opinion on this question, too.
TIA,
Dave |

You should be able to use the GoldMine Merge/Purge process if, and that is a big if, you set it up properly.
Oh, did I mention to backup before you tried this? |

You can use GoldMine's Merge/Purge features to do this, but unless you stop the problem at the source... during the import... your problem will just keep coming back.
With products like GoldBox or Inaport, you can do more comprehensive record matching and only bring in the new records and/or update a field on records that already exist in the database. |

I would use GoldBox or Inaport as opposed to GoldMine's merge/purge. I am more familiar with GoldBox so I will refer to that. It is much safer than GoldMine's merge purge because it give you many more options to include the ability to do a dry run without changing data just to make sure that you have used the correct criteria. This is particularly true when compared to older versions of GoldMine.
Also, properly used, if GoldBox is used to handle your imports, you will be able to prevent duplication during the importing process. |

Thanks to all. I agree on preventing rather than fixing problems......The tragic thing is, IT has Goldbox - and complaints about the learning curve.
DJ - I think you said in a post at the old FR forum that the M/P in GM had a record/data limit and we'd have to do it in chunks?

I offer (paid) assistance with GoldBox. You'd be surprised how easy much of it actually is. But of course, parts of it are definitely advanced. I really don't think that should surprise anyone. |

I agree with Bob Taylor. Once you start using GoldBox, you will find it quite easy to use. Bob Taylor would be a good way to get a head start on the use of this wonderful program. |

I am sure Bob Taylor would be a good start... so would any GoldMine/GoldBox partner that haves experience and expertise! |

I have always contended that GoldBox is extremely user unfriendly. This is not to say that I do not recommend GoldBox, as I do recommend GoldBox, however, whenever I recommend GoldBox I always recommend the services of Bob Taylor in conjunction with the GoldBox product. I do not want the users having to learn this product to solve their immediate problems. The learning curve is just too extreme. On the other hand, more often than not, GoldBox is the recommended solution. I am of the opinion that if you are going to recommend GoldBox that you recommend it as a bundle with the services of Bob Taylor. |

Thanks, DJ; I am delighted by your recommendation. I'll continue to aver that GoldBox gets a bit of a raw deal when it comes to the user unfriendly thing; but I'm sure you'd be disappointed if I didn't do that |
